Exchange 2010 SP2 Hybrid Edition

What is Exchange 2010 Hybrid Edition? I thought there were only two editions – Standard and Enterprise. This is the question that came through today.

Let me explain. The hybrid edition is nothing more than a trial version of Exchange 2010 SP2. It is used to connect your on-premise Exchange environment with Office 365. If you have purchased Office 365 and want to move to the cloud, you need a server which connects your environment with Office 365.

All you need to do is to install a trial Exchange 2010 SP2 server and get a hybrid key from Office 365 support. Once the key is applied, it will act as a “hybrid” server. This key is free for Office 365 customers.

What if you have a trial of Office 365 and want to test the functionality? Just use a trial Exchange 2010 SP2 server and it will do the job.

In short, hybrid edition is a server which facilitates co-existence with Office 365. Hope this clears the confusion.
